Automatic Connection (Same Apple ID)
If your AirPods are already set up with an iPhone, iPad, or Mac using the same Apple ID as your Apple TV, the AirPods are already paired. Apple syncs Bluetooth pairings across all your devices through iCloud.
- Put your AirPods in your ears (or open the case nearby).
- On your Apple TV, press and hold the TV button on the Siri Remote to open Control Center.
- Select the AirPlay/audio icon (the one that looks like a speaker or headphones).
- Your AirPods appear in the list. Select them.
- Audio switches to your AirPods immediately.
This is the fastest method and works every time if both devices share an Apple ID. Your AirPods show up by name (like “Ugur’s AirPods Pro”) alongside other available audio outputs like HomePod, Bluetooth speakers, and the TV’s built-in speakers.
Manual Pairing (Different Apple ID)
If your AirPods are linked to a different Apple ID than your Apple TV (or if they’re brand new), pair them through Bluetooth settings.
- Put your AirPods in the charging case and open the lid.
- Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the status light flashes white.
- On your Apple TV, go to Settings, then Remotes and Devices, then Bluetooth.
- Your AirPods appear in the “Other Devices” section. Select them.
- The Apple TV confirms the pairing. Audio now routes to your AirPods.
For AirPods Max, press and hold the noise control button on the right ear cup until the status light flashes white, then follow the same steps on the Apple TV.
Switch Audio to AirPods During Playback
You don’t need to pause what you’re watching. Switch audio to AirPods on the fly.
- While content is playing, press and hold the TV button on the Siri Remote.
- Control Center slides down. Tap the audio routing icon.
- Select your AirPods from the list.
- Audio switches instantly. The TV speakers go silent.
To switch back to TV speakers, repeat the process and select “TV Speakers” or your soundbar from the same menu.
Apple TV lets two people listen with their own AirPods at the same time. Both pairs play the same audio, each with independent volume control.

- Connect the first pair of AirPods using any method above.
- Press and hold the TV button to open Control Center.
- Tap the audio routing icon.
- Select “Share Audio.”
- The second person puts their AirPods near the Apple TV (in the case with the lid open, pressing the pairing button).
- The Apple TV detects them. Confirm the connection.
- Both pairs now receive audio simultaneously.
Each person controls their own volume through the Apple TV’s Control Center or by using Siri (“Hey Siri, set volume to 50 percent”). This is perfect for watching TV late at night without disturbing others, or when two people want different volume levels.
Adjust AirPods Settings on Apple TV
With AirPods connected, you can customize a few settings directly from the Apple TV.
Noise control (AirPods Pro and AirPods Max): Press and hold the TV button to open Control Center, long-press on the AirPods volume slider, and switch between Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, and Off.
Spatial Audio: Apple TV supports Spatial Audio with head tracking when using AirPods Pro or AirPods Max. This creates a surround-sound effect that shifts as you move your head. Enable it in Settings, then Remotes and Devices, then Bluetooth, then select your AirPods, then toggle Spatial Audio on. It works with Dolby Atmos content on Apple TV+, Disney+, and other apps that support it.
Personalized Spatial Audio: If you’ve set up Personalized Spatial Audio through your iPhone (Settings, then AirPods, then Personalized Spatial Audio), those settings carry over to Apple TV automatically for a more accurate surround effect.
Troubleshooting AirPods on Apple TV
AirPods don’t appear in the Bluetooth list. Make sure the AirPods are in pairing mode (white flashing light). Check that they’re not connected to another device – if your iPhone is nearby and connected to the AirPods, they won’t show as available on the Apple TV. Disconnect them from the iPhone first, or put them in pairing mode.

Audio plays through TV speakers despite AirPods being connected. Open Control Center (hold the TV button) and manually select your AirPods as the audio output. Sometimes the connection establishes but the audio routing doesn’t switch automatically.
Audio is out of sync with video. Bluetooth audio has slight latency. Apple compensates for this with AirPods, but if you notice lip-sync issues, go to Settings, then Video and Audio, then Wireless Audio Sync. Follow the on-screen calibration process – it plays a test tone through both the TV speakers and AirPods to align the timing.
AirPods keep disconnecting during playback. Check the AirPods battery level (visible in Control Center when connected). Low battery causes dropouts. Bluetooth interference from other devices can also cause disconnections – move other Bluetooth devices away from the Apple TV. Restarting the Apple TV (Settings, then System, then Restart) often fixes persistent disconnection issues.

Can I use non-Apple Bluetooth headphones with Apple TV?
Yes. Go to Settings, then Remotes and Devices, then Bluetooth, and pair any Bluetooth headphones or speaker. Sony, Bose, JBL, and other brands all work. You lose Apple-specific features like automatic pairing, Share Audio, and Spatial Audio, but the basic audio output works fine.
Do AirPods work with older Apple TV models?
AirPods require Apple TV HD (4th generation, released 2015) or later. The Apple TV 3rd generation and earlier don’t support Bluetooth audio output. If you have an older model, a Bluetooth transmitter plugged into the TV’s audio output is the workaround.
Can I use AirPods and TV speakers at the same time?
Not directly from the Apple TV. When AirPods are selected as the audio output, TV speakers mute. If you want both, pair a HomePod as the default Apple TV speaker (which plays through the TV’s audio system via HDMI ARC) and also connect AirPods – but this only works with HomePod, not regular TV speakers.
