PS5 Keeps Shutting Down? 6 Quick Fixes

Why Does My PS5 Keep Turning Off

A PS5 that shuts down by itself is annoying, but it’s usually fixable. If it’s happened once or twice, it might be nothing. But if it keeps happening, something needs attention.

Most of the time, you can sort this out at home without sending your console in for repair. Here are six fixes to try, starting with the simplest ones.

1. Update the PS5’s Firmware

Outdated system software can trigger random shutdowns. A firmware update is quick and might be all you need.

To update your console’s firmware:

1. Make sure your PS5 is connected to the internet.

2. Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.

3. Select System Software Update.

4. Pick Update Over the Internet.

5. Hit Update and let it finish.

If your PS5 can’t connect online, you can update manually using a USB drive instead.

2. Disable Rest Mode

Rest mode is supposed to let your PS5 sleep while charging controllers and downloading updates in the background. But it’s a known troublemaker. Some users report that rest mode causes unexpected shutdowns.

To turn it off:

1. Open Settings on your PS5.

2. Go to System.

We also cover how to connect PS5 controller to PC in a separate article worth checking out.

3. Select Power Saving.

4. Open Set Features Available in Rest Mode.

5. For both “During Media Playback” and “While Playing Games“, choose “Don’t Put in Rest Mode“.

3. Disable HDMI Device Link

HDMI Device Link automatically turns your TV on when you power up your PS5. Handy in theory, but it can also trigger random shutdowns.

To disable it:

1. Open Settings on your PS5.

2. Select “System“.

3. Choose HDMI.

4. Turn off the HDMI Device Link feature.

4. Check Your Power Source

If your PS5 shares a power strip with a bunch of other devices, it might not be getting enough power. That alone can cause shutdowns.

Try these steps:

1. Plug the PS5 directly into a wall outlet.

2. Check the power cord for visible damage. Even if it looks fine, try swapping it with a different one.

3. Test a different wall outlet.

4. If you suspect overheating or a bad power supply, let the console cool down completely before trying again.

5. Fix Overheating Problems

Your PS5 has built-in protection that shuts it down when it gets too hot. This saves the hardware from damage, but it also means ventilation really matters.

Here’s what to do:

1. Turn off the console.

2. Wait at least an hour for it to cool down.

3. Move the PS5 to a spot with better airflow.

4. Clean all the vents. Dust buildup is one of the most common culprits.

5. Turn it back on and test it.

6. If airflow is still a problem, the internal fan might need cleaning or replacing.

6. Rebuild the PS5 Database

Rebuilding the database clears out corrupted data and can solve a range of issues, including random shutdowns.

Here’s the process:

1. Power off the PS5 completely.

2. Hold the power button for a few seconds to boot into Safe Mode.

3. Connect your DualSense controller with a USB-C cable, then press the PS button.

4. Select Rebuild Database and confirm with OK.

5. Wait for it to finish. This can take a while depending on how much data you have stored.

If none of these fixes solve the problem, reach out to PlayStation support. They can help with more advanced troubleshooting or set up a repair or replacement if needed.
