The Snapdragon 778G 5G: A Mid-Range Chip That Punched Above Its Weight

Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 778G in May 2021, and it quickly became one of the most popular mid-range processors in Android phones. Built on a 6nm process by TSMC, it brought features that were previously reserved for flagship chips down to the $400 to $600 phone range.

The 778G used a Kryo 670 CPU with one prime core clocked at 2.4 GHz, three performance cores at 2.2 GHz, and four efficiency cores at 1.9 GHz. The Adreno 642L GPU handled graphics, and Qualcomm’s integrated X53 modem brought 5G connectivity with support for both sub-6 GHz and mmWave bands.

What made the 778G stand out was the balance. It didn’t try to compete with the Snapdragon 888 on raw speed, but it ran cooler, used less battery, and still delivered smooth performance for daily tasks, gaming, and photography. It also included Qualcomm’s 6th-gen AI Engine, which helped with camera processing, voice recognition, and on-device machine learning.

Phones That Used the Snapdragon 778G

The chip showed up in a lot of well-regarded mid-range phones throughout 2021 and 2022:

Samsung Galaxy A52s 5G: Samsung’s best-selling mid-range phone in many markets. The 778G gave it a noticeable speed boost over the Galaxy A52 (which used the Snapdragon 750G).

Nothing Phone (1): The debut phone from Carl Pei’s company used the 778G+ (a slightly overclocked variant). It was a bold design choice, and the chip kept things smooth without overheating.

Motorola Edge 20: A 6.7-inch phone with a 144Hz display that the 778G drove without breaking a sweat.

By late 2022, Qualcomm had moved on to the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 and later the 7+ Gen 2 and 7s Gen 3 for the mid-range segment. But the 778G set the template for what a good mid-range chip should look like, and its influence is still visible in Qualcomm’s current lineup.

Where the 778G Sits in 2026

Five years after launch, phones with the 778G are still usable but showing their age. They’ll run social media apps, email, and web browsing without trouble, but newer games and features like on-device generative AI are pushing beyond what this chip can comfortably handle.

If you’re comparing devices side by side, a current mid-range chip like the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 or the Dimensity 8300 delivers roughly double the GPU performance and significantly better AI processing compared to the 778G. For reference, the processing gap is similar to comparing a recent MacBook Pro to a model from five years ago. Still works, but the newer hardware handles modern workloads much better.

The Google-Samsung Smartwatch Partnership

Also in 2021, Google and Samsung announced something that shook up the smartwatch world. They were merging Samsung’s Tizen OS with Google’s Wear OS into a single unified platform. The result was called Wear OS Powered by Samsung at launch, and later just Wear OS by Google.

Before this partnership, both platforms were struggling. Wear OS (formerly Android Wear) had a small app library and sluggish performance. Tizen had smooth performance on Samsung watches but even fewer third-party apps. Neither was a serious competitor to the Apple Watch.

The merger combined Samsung’s hardware and software optimization skills with Google’s app ecosystem and services. The first product of this partnership was the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, released in August 2021.

What Changed with the Unified Platform

The merger brought several big improvements:

Google apps on Samsung watches: For the first time, Galaxy Watch owners got Google Maps, Google Assistant (eventually, after a delayed rollout), Google Pay, and the full Google Play Store on their wrists.

Better app support: Developers now only had to build for one platform instead of two, which meant more apps and faster updates. Strava, Spotify, WhatsApp, and other major apps started investing in Wear OS versions.

Samsung’s hardware advantages: Samsung’s BioActive sensor, which combines optical heart rate, electrical heart rate (ECG), and bioelectrical impedance analysis (body composition) into a single chip, became a defining feature. Other Wear OS watches couldn’t match the health tracking capabilities.

One UI Watch: Samsung added its own One UI Watch layer on top of Wear OS, giving Galaxy Watch users a familiar Samsung experience with quick settings, a rotating bezel interface, and Samsung Health integration.

The State of Wear OS in 2026

Five years into the partnership, Wear OS has come a long way. The Galaxy Watch 7 and Google Pixel Watch 3, both released in 2025, run Wear OS 5 and offer performance that’s finally competitive with the Apple Watch in most areas.

Google’s side of the equation has gotten stronger too. Wear OS now runs on watches from Samsung, Google, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Mobvoi (TicWatch), and several others. The app ecosystem has grown considerably, and Google has integrated Gemini AI features into the platform for smarter notifications and on-wrist assistant capabilities.

Samsung still makes the most popular Wear OS watches by a wide margin, and the company continues to add exclusive features through One UI Watch that other manufacturers can’t match. The partnership has been one of the more successful collaborations in consumer tech, turning two struggling platforms into a legitimate smartwatch ecosystem.

If you’re looking at smartwatches today, the Wear OS options are worth considering alongside the Apple Watch, especially if you’re already using an Android phone. The Galaxy Watch 7 and Pixel Watch 3 both offer strong health tracking, solid battery life (around two days for the Galaxy Watch, about a day and a half for the Pixel Watch), and full access to the Google Play Store.

Looking Back at 2021’s Impact

Both the Snapdragon 778G and the Wear OS merger were announcements that didn’t get as much headline attention as flagship phone launches or Apple events, but their long-term impact was significant.

The 778G proved that mid-range phones could be genuinely good, not just “good for the price.” It set a performance floor that every competitor had to meet, and it helped make 5G accessible at lower price points.

The Wear OS partnership gave Android users a smartwatch platform that could actually compete with Apple. Before the merger, recommending an Android smartwatch was hard. After the Galaxy Watch 4 launched, it became easy.

These weren’t flashy announcements, but they shifted what people could expect from their tech at every price point.
