Sony FDR X3000 Action Camera Review

Sony took a different approach with the FDR-X3000. Instead of building another rectangular action camera like GoPro, they designed it to look and feel more like a small camcorder. The shape is similar to Sony’s earlier action cameras like the HDR-AS50, but everything under the hood has been improved.

That camcorder-style shape isn’t just for looks. Sony’s action cameras have always been comfortable to hold by hand, and that matters more than ever with the FDR-X3000. The image stabilization is so good that you can literally walk around filming and get smooth, interference-free footage.

Like its predecessor, the FDR-X1000V, the FDR-X3000 comes in a clean white finish. It weighs about 115 grams, which is the same as the older model. That’s pretty impressive considering how much better the stabilization is.

The body is IPX4 splash-proof on its own. For underwater use, you’ll need the included waterproof case, which protects the camera down to 60 meters. The case does add some bulk, though.

Sony clearly listened to user feedback on this one. The FDR-X3000 has three recording lights instead of two, making it easier to tell when you’re actually recording.

Other Key Features of the Sony FDR X3000

Professional 4K Quality

The new Zeiss Tessar lens produces significantly less distortion than earlier models. Paired with the BIONZ X processor, video quality stays consistent across all settings.

Full pixel readout means both Full HD and 4K footage come out sharp with accurate colors. The built-in stereo mic with noise reduction is a nice bonus for capturing audio on the go.

Tough Body

Even without the waterproof housing, the FDR-X3000 is freeze-proof and splash-proof. Take it snowboarding, hiking in the rain, or out to the dirt track. It’ll hold up.

The tripod screw mount is built into the camera body itself and into the waterproof case, so you can easily attach it to a tripod stand.

Underwater Housing Included

You don’t need to buy extra gear for underwater shooting. The included housing takes the FDR-X3000 down to 60 meters and has convenient camera buttons and a flat port in front of the lens.

The casing makes it easy to control all camera functions while protecting against dampness, dust, rust, sand, and impacts. Whether you’re exploring underwater environments or rough terrain, you’re covered.

Remote Camera Control

The included Live-View Remote lets you control the FDR-X3000 and stream a live preview of what you’re capturing. You can handle power on/off, start/stop, and shooting settings from your wrist.

Sony’s Play Memories app offers another way to get live previews. It’s available on both Android and iOS.

Built-in Connectivity

The FDR-X3000 comes with Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, and Wi-Fi built right in. That means instant control, easy connectivity, and GPS tracking for your adventures.

You also get an intuitive interface, adjustable beep volume, and three recording lights. The back of the camera has HDMI, microphone, and USB ports for connecting accessories.

Stereo Sound with Wind Noise Reduction

The built-in microphone captures audio in two-track stereo, and the wind noise reduction does a good job of cutting down interference from wind.

Clean audio really does make a difference, even on footage that looks amazing. And if you need better sound quality, there’s a microphone jack for connecting an external mic.

Final Thoughts

Sony went their own way with the FDR-X3000, and it paid off. The optical image stabilization is the star feature here, and the waterproof housing means you can take it just about anywhere.

The battery life could be better, especially at higher resolutions. But overall, it’s an excellent action camera and a strong alternative to GoPros.
