Sometimes, even after putting in your best effort, your vlogs or video clips just don’t have the GoPro video quality you were hoping for. So what’s going wrong?

Shooting great GoPro videos isn’t actually that hard. It just takes a bit of thinking about your settings and workflow. You’ve probably seen those high-quality GoPro videos from YouTubers that look crisp, clear, and vibrant, even though they’re shot on the same GoPro action cam you own.

So before you start comparing your footage to what’s on YouTube, ask yourself two questions:

1. Did you shoot the video with the right settings?

2. Does the video look bad only when you upload it to YouTube or play it on a screen?

If the answer to either question is “yes,” you’re in the right place. Let’s fix both problems step by step.

What to do if it isn’t a well-shot video?

Your best bet is to reshoot the video using the correct settings. Let’s go through some recommended settings that’ll improve your GoPro video quality.

Step 1. Use Protune

If you’re not using Protune while shooting your vlogs or videos, you’re missing out big time. Without Protune, it’s basically like using your phone camera on default settings. The camera makes all the decisions for you, and those automatic choices aren’t always the best ones.

Once you turn on Protune, you’ll see a bunch of options for manually controlling the shot. You can adjust ISO, white balance, sharpness, and several other settings that make a real difference in your footage.

The only downside? Protune eats up more space on your memory card because it uses a higher bitrate for better video quality. A 64GB card might last you all day without Protune, but with it turned on, you could burn through that same card in a few hours of continuous recording.

To activate Protune, go to your camera settings and look for the Protune toggle. On newer GoPro models, it’s found under the video settings menu. Flip it on, and you’ll immediately see additional options appear below it.

Step 2. Get the correct manual settings

There are three main manual settings you need to pay attention to while shooting.

ISO

You won’t always have a well-lit environment for your video shoot, and this is where ISO comes in. If lighting is an issue, try bumping up the ISO to match the needs of your shot.

On the flip side, if you’ve got plenty of light, dial the ISO down to get the right brightness and impact. Just keep in mind that cranking up the ISO can add noise to your footage, so be careful with it.

A good rule of thumb: set your ISO minimum to 100 and your maximum to 400 for outdoor daytime shooting. For indoor or low-light situations, you can push the max to 800 or 1600, but expect some visible grain at those levels. The goal is to give the camera enough range to work with while keeping noise under control.

Shutter speed

Shutter speed is directly tied to the frame rate of your shot. If you’re shooting at 30fps, the recommended shutter speed is 1/60th. This follows the 180-degree shutter rule, where the ideal shutter speed equals your frame rate multiplied by 2.

Shooting at 60fps? Set your shutter speed to 1/120th of a second. This same rule applies to movies and TV shows, so you’re in good company.

Why does this matter? Using the correct shutter speed gives your footage natural-looking motion blur. Too fast a shutter speed makes movement look choppy and unnatural. Too slow, and everything turns into a blurry mess. The 180-degree rule gives you that sweet spot where motion looks smooth and cinematic.

If you’re shooting fast-moving subjects like skateboarding, mountain biking, or skiing, you might want to bump the shutter speed slightly higher than the 180-degree rule suggests. This reduces per-frame blur and makes it easier to grab sharp still frames from your footage later.

White balance

White balance controls how warm, cool, or neutral your shot looks. Whether you’re shooting outdoors in harsh sunlight or indoors with dim lighting, the white balance setting manages the color balance for you.

For outdoor shooting in daylight, set white balance to around 5500K (Native or Daylight). For cloudy skies, bump it up to 6500K. Indoor shooting under standard lighting works best around 3200K. If you’re shooting with mixed lighting, Auto white balance is usually the safest bet.

Getting this right in-camera saves you a lot of time in post-production. Fixing color casts after the fact is possible, but it’s always better to get it close during the shoot.

Step 3. Choose the right resolution and frame rate

This is another area where a lot of GoPro shooters trip up. You need to match your resolution and frame rate to what you’re actually shooting.

For standard vlogs and everyday video, 1080p at 30fps is a great baseline. It looks sharp, file sizes are manageable, and it plays well on every platform. If you want smoother motion or plan to slow down clips in editing, bump up to 1080p at 60fps.

For the best possible quality, 4K at 30fps gives you incredible detail and the option to crop in during editing without losing sharpness. Just be aware that 4K files are large and require more processing power to edit.

Avoid using 4K at 60fps unless you specifically need it for a project. The files are enormous, battery life drops fast, and most viewers won’t notice the difference between 4K30 and 4K60 on a standard screen.

How do you manage a well-shot video that looks bad while playing or uploading?

Always edit your videos properly before uploading them to YouTube or any other platform. There are plenty of free video editing programs out there that’ll get the job done.

You can also go with premium video editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro-CC or Cyberlink Power Director to give your videos a more professional finish.

Why YouTube makes your video look worse

This is one of the most common complaints from GoPro users. You shoot a beautiful 4K clip, upload it to YouTube, and it comes out looking mushy and soft. What happened?

YouTube re-compresses every video you upload. It doesn’t matter how good your original file looks. YouTube’s encoding process squeezes the file down to save bandwidth, and that compression costs you some quality. The effect is most noticeable right after uploading, since YouTube processes lower-resolution versions first and takes time to finish the full 4K version.

Here’s how to minimize the damage:

Upload in the highest resolution your camera supports. YouTube allocates a higher bitrate to 4K uploads compared to 1080p, so even if your audience watches at 1080p, a 4K upload will look better than a native 1080p upload.

Export from your editing software at the highest quality settings. In Premiere Pro, use the “Match Source” preset and set the bitrate to at least 30 Mbps for 1080p or 80 Mbps for 4K. In DaVinci Resolve, export as H.264 or H.265 with a quality setting of “Best.”

Give YouTube time to process. After uploading, wait at least an hour or two before sharing the link. The full-quality version takes time to encode, and early viewers might see a blurry, low-resolution preview.
