What Auto Off Timers Do on the D5600
The Nikon D5600 has a set of automatic shutdown timers that turn off the screen or put the camera to sleep after a period of inactivity. Nikon built these in to save battery life, and they work well for general shooting. But the default timing isn’t always right for every situation.
If you’ve ever been reviewing photos and the screen went dark before you were done looking, or you were in the middle of changing a menu setting and the camera shut itself off, you’ve run into the auto off timers. The good news is that every one of them can be adjusted individually.
Where to Find the Auto Off Timer Settings
The auto off timers live in the Setup Menu. Here’s how to get there:
1. Press the MENU button on the back of the camera.
2. Navigate to the Setup Menu (the wrench icon).
3. Scroll down to Auto off timers.
4. Press the right arrow or OK to enter the submenu.
Inside, you’ll see four separate timers that each control a different part of the camera’s behavior. Let’s go through them one at a time.

The Four Auto Off Timers
1. Playback Timer
This controls how long the monitor stays on when you’re reviewing photos in playback mode. If you press the play button and start scrolling through your images, this timer determines when the screen goes dark from inactivity.
Default: 10 seconds
Options: 4 seconds, 8 seconds, 20 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes
Ten seconds is pretty short, especially if you’re showing photos to someone or carefully checking focus and exposure on a shot. If you find yourself constantly pressing buttons just to wake the screen back up, bump this to 1 minute or even 5 minutes. The trade-off is more battery drain, but it’s worth it when you’re doing a serious review session.
2. Menus Timer
This one controls how long the monitor stays on while you’re navigating the camera’s menus. If you stop pressing buttons while you’re in the menu system, the screen shuts off after this timer runs out.
Default: 1 minute
Options: 4 seconds, 8 seconds, 20 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes
One minute is usually fine for most people. But if you’re learning the camera and spending time reading through menu options or figuring out settings for the first time, extending this to 5 minutes keeps the screen from going blank while you’re still thinking. Once you know the menus well, you can drop it back to 1 minute or even 20 seconds.
3. Image Review Timer
After you take a photo, the D5600 briefly shows the image on the rear monitor so you can see what you just shot. This timer controls how long that preview stays on screen before it disappears.
Default: 4 seconds
Options: 4 seconds, 8 seconds, 20 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes
Four seconds gives you a quick glance at the shot. It’s enough to spot major issues like a blown-out sky or a closed-eye portrait, but not enough time to zoom in and check sharpness. If you’re shooting portraits or product photos and need to verify details after each shot, try 8 or 20 seconds. For street photography or action shooting where you want to keep your eye on the scene, keep it at 4 seconds or even turn image review off entirely (that’s a separate setting in the Playback Menu).
4. Standby Timer
The standby timer is the big one. This controls how long the camera waits before it enters a low-power sleep mode when you’re not actively pressing any buttons. The monitor turns off, the exposure meter deactivates, and the camera goes into a near-off state. It wakes up instantly when you half-press the shutter button.
Default: 30 seconds
Options: 4 seconds, 8 seconds, 20 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, no limit
Thirty seconds works well for active shooting. But if you’re on a tripod waiting for the right light or shooting a long event where there are pauses between action, 30 seconds can be annoying. The camera keeps going to sleep, and you have to half-press the shutter each time to wake it. For those situations, set it to 5 or 10 minutes.
Don’t set it to “no limit” unless you really need it. Leaving the camera awake indefinitely will drain your battery fast, especially if the Live View screen is on.
Recommended Settings for Different Situations
Everyday Shooting
For general photography where you’re walking around and taking photos as opportunities come up, the defaults are mostly fine. You might bump the image review to 8 seconds so you get a slightly longer look at each shot, but the rest can stay where they are.
Playback: 10 seconds | Menus: 1 minute | Image review: 8 seconds | Standby: 30 seconds
Long Shoots (Events, Weddings, Concerts)
Events have downtime between key moments. If the camera keeps sleeping during those pauses, you might miss a shot while waking it up. Extend the standby timer to 5 minutes so the camera stays ready.
Playback: 20 seconds | Menus: 1 minute | Image review: 4 seconds | Standby: 5 minutes
Battery Saving (Travel, Hiking, All-Day Outings)
When you’re stretching a single battery over a full day of hiking or sightseeing, keep every timer as short as you can tolerate. Shorter timers mean less screen-on time, which is the biggest battery drain on the D5600.
Playback: 4 seconds | Menus: 20 seconds | Image review: 4 seconds | Standby: 8 seconds
Presentations and Tethered Shooting
If you’re showing images to a client on the camera’s screen or shooting tethered in a studio, you don’t want any auto-off interruptions. Max out the timers so the camera stays awake.
Playback: 10 minutes | Menus: 10 minutes | Image review: 1 minute | Standby: 30 minutes
How Auto Off Timers Affect Battery Life
The D5600 is rated for about 970 shots per charge (CIPA standard), which is quite good for a DSLR in this class. But that rating assumes the default timer settings. If you extend all the timers to their maximum values, you’ll see that number drop significantly because the monitor stays on much longer.
The rear LCD is the single biggest power consumer on the camera. Every extra minute the screen stays lit costs you shots. If battery life is a concern, keep the timers short and carry a spare EN-EL14a battery. They’re small, light, and cheap enough that there’s no reason not to have a backup.
Another factor: Live View mode drains the battery much faster than using the optical viewfinder. If you’re shooting through the viewfinder, the standby timer matters less because the rear LCD isn’t actively displaying an image. But in Live View, every second of screen time counts.
Related Power Settings Worth Checking
Monitor brightness: Found in the Setup Menu under Monitor brightness. Lowering it from the default saves battery and makes the screen easier to read in bright sunlight. A setting of -1 or -2 is a good balance between visibility and power savings.
Image review on/off: In the Playback Menu, you can turn image review off completely. This means the camera won’t show you the photo after you take it. You save a few seconds of screen time per shot, which adds up over hundreds of photos.
Auto info display off: Under the Setup Menu, this setting controls whether the info display on the rear monitor turns on every time you press a button. Turning it off reduces the number of times the screen lights up.
Viewfinder vs. Live View: Using the optical viewfinder instead of Live View is the single biggest battery-saving move you can make. The viewfinder uses almost no power compared to the rear LCD.
