Can You Play Minecraft on a Chromebook?
Minecraft is one of those games that everyone seems to love. Kids, teens, adults, it doesn’t matter. The blocky sandbox world has a pull that keeps players coming back, whether they’re building castles or surviving zombie attacks.
The game is officially available on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. But Chrome OS (the operating system that runs Chromebooks) isn’t on that official list. So if you own a Chromebook, you might think you’re out of luck.
Good news: you can absolutely get Minecraft running on a Chromebook. It just takes a few extra steps. You can play it on a Chromebook using either the Android app or the Linux-based Java Edition.
Installation Options and Editions
Before you start, you’ll need to check your Chromebook’s compatibility. The game can run without installing Crouton (a script package that lets Chrome OS run alongside Linux). You also don’t need to switch into developer mode.
What you do need is either Android app support or Linux support enabled on your Chromebook. One important note: school-issued Chromebooks typically have these features locked down by the administrator, so you may need to ask for access.
Minecraft comes in two editions you can install on a Chromebook:
Education Edition
This version is designed for classroom use. It focuses on creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration between students. If you’re a student or educator, this is the easiest way to get started.
Java Edition
This is the full version of Minecraft with all the features, world generation, mods, and community content you’d expect. It runs through the Linux environment on your Chromebook.
How to Install Minecraft Education Edition
The Education Edition is the simpler install. Here’s how to do it:
Steps may vary depending on your Chromebook model and Chrome OS version. Check the official Chromebook support documentation if you run into issues.
Step 1: Open your browser, go to Settings, and turn on the Google Play Store. This lets you install Android apps and games on your Chromebook.
Step 2: Open the Google Play Store and search for “Minecraft: Education Edition.” It’s free to download. Make sure the developer listed is Mojang.
Step 3: Open the Minecraft app after it downloads. Log in with your account.
Students get 10 free logins. After that, you’ll need a subscription to keep playing.

Know Two editions
How to Install Minecraft Java Edition
The Java Edition takes a few more steps because it runs through the Linux environment. Follow along carefully.
Step 1: Open Settings, click “Advanced,” then click “Developers.”
Note: If you’re using a school-issued Chromebook, you probably won’t see this option. Contact your administrator to get it enabled.
Step 2: Turn on the Linux development environment (Beta). This lets your Chromebook run Linux tools and applications. You’ll find the toggle under the “Developers” section.
Step 3: Once Linux is installed, open the Terminal. Go to the App drawer, find Linux apps, and select “Terminal.”
Step 4: In the terminal, run these two commands to update your Linux environment:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade -y

Step 5: Download the Minecraft installer from the official Minecraft website. Pick the Debian/Ubuntu version.
Step 6: After the Minecraft.deb file downloads, move it into the “Linux files” section in your Files app.
Step 7: Double-click the .deb file and hit “Install.” That’s it. Minecraft is now on your Chromebook.
Step 8: Find the Minecraft Launcher in your App drawer under Linux apps. You can also just search for “Minecraft” to find it.
Step 9: When the launcher opens, log in with your Mojang or Microsoft account. If you don’t have one yet, you can sign up during this step.
Step 10: After logging in, the launcher will likely show an available update. Click “Play demo” to download and install the latest version.
The app will close and reopen automatically after the update. If it doesn’t reopen on its own, go back to Step 8 to launch it manually.
Step 11: Click “Play demo world” and you’re in. Enjoy Minecraft on your Chromebook!
The game uses standard WASD keyboard controls for movement. You can adjust mouse sensitivity in the settings if needed.
Note: If you hit installation errors, you may need to install the JDK (Java Development Kit). Run this command in the terminal:
sudo apt-get install default-jdk -y
