How to Connect Ecobee to Alexa?

Why Connect Ecobee to Alexa?

Ecobee thermostats are some of the smartest climate-control devices on the market in 2026. Pairing one with Amazon Alexa lets you adjust your home’s temperature, check sensor readings, and switch heating or cooling modes with nothing more than a voice command.

Better still, newer Ecobee models (SmartThermostat Premium and SmartThermostat Enhanced) have a built-in speaker and microphone, so the thermostat itself doubles as an Alexa device. That means you can play music, set timers, hear weather forecasts, and manage shopping lists right from the hallway.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather these items and confirm the following before you begin:

  • An active Amazon account (amazon.com).
  • The Amazon Alexa app installed on your Android or iOS device.
  • An Ecobee thermostat that is registered, powered on, and connected to your Wi-Fi network.
  • Owner-level access to the Ecobee home. If you are listed as a member rather than the owner, Alexa device discovery will not work.

Step 1: Enable the Ecobee Skill in the Alexa App

The Alexa app uses “skills” to communicate with third-party devices. You need to enable the Ecobee skill before Alexa can see your thermostat.

  1. Open the Alexa app and tap More in the bottom navigation bar.
  2. Select Skills & Games.
  3. Tap the search icon and type Ecobee.
  4. Choose the Ecobee skill from the results list.
  5. Tap Enable to Use.
  6. Sign in with your Ecobee account credentials when prompted. This links your Ecobee account to Alexa.

After enabling, Alexa can discover any Ecobee thermostats and sensors tied to your account. Simply say, “Alexa, discover devices,” or tap Discover Devices in the app.

Optional: Enable the Ecobee Plus Skill

The standard Ecobee skill covers basic commands: checking the current temperature, seeing what the thermostat is set to, and changing the target temperature. If you want expanded control, enable the Ecobee Plus skill using the same steps above.

Ecobee Plus unlocks additional voice commands such as toggling the fan, resuming a schedule, setting a vacation hold, or switching between heating and cooling modes. The trade-off is that every command must include the phrase “ask Ecobee.” For example, instead of “Alexa, set the temperature to 72,” you would say, “Alexa, ask Ecobee to set the temperature to 72.”

Step 2: Register and Prepare Your Ecobee

If you haven’t already, register your Ecobee through the Ecobee app. Registration unlocks remote control, firmware updates, and smart-home integrations.

  1. Download the Ecobee app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Create an account or sign in.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to add your thermostat. Make sure the device is connected to your home Wi-Fi network.

On the thermostat itself, tap the microphone icon on the home screen to reach the voice-control setup. This screen will walk you through enabling Alexa directly on the device if your model supports built-in Alexa.

Step 3: Link Alexa Through the Ecobee App

You can also start the connection from the Ecobee side:

  1. Open the Ecobee app and tap the Thermostat tile to view the thermostat screen.
  2. Tap the microphone icon at the bottom of the display.
  3. Select Enable Amazon Alexa from the pop-up menu.
  4. Sign in with your Amazon account credentials on the next screen.
  5. After signing in, the app will prompt you to ask Alexa to discover devices. Say, “Alexa, discover devices,” and wait for the search to finish.
  6. Tap Done once Alexa confirms that your Ecobee has been linked.

Step 4: Test the Connection

With the skill enabled and the devices discovered, try a few commands to confirm everything is working:

  • “Alexa, what is the temperature inside?”
  • “Alexa, set the thermostat to 70 degrees.”
  • “Alexa, what is the thermostat set to?”

If you also enabled the Ecobee Plus skill, test an advanced command like, “Alexa, ask Ecobee to turn the fan on.”

Managing Voice Controls on Your Ecobee

Once Alexa is linked, tapping the microphone button on your Ecobee home screen opens the voice-control panel. From there you can:

  • Toggle individual Ecobee microphones on or off (useful if you have multiple Ecobee devices).
  • Adjust Alexa’s playback volume.
  • Manually activate Alexa if background noise is preventing the wake word from being recognized.

Troubleshooting Tips

If Alexa cannot discover your Ecobee, double-check that your thermostat is online and that you are signed into the same Ecobee account in both apps. Disabling and re-enabling the Ecobee skill in Alexa often resolves stubborn pairing issues. Also confirm that your Ecobee firmware is up to date by checking the About section in the Ecobee app.

For homes with multiple Alexa devices, make sure the correct Echo or Alexa-enabled speaker is set as the preferred device in your Alexa app’s device settings.

Alexa Says “Device Is Not Responding”

This typically means the Ecobee has lost its Wi-Fi connection. Check that your router is online and that the thermostat shows a Wi-Fi icon on its display. Restarting the thermostat by pulling it off its wall plate, waiting ten seconds, and snapping it back on often restores the connection.

Voice Commands Work on the Ecobee but Not on an Echo

Confirm that the Ecobee skill is enabled in the Alexa app, not just on the thermostat itself. The two connections are separate. Open the Alexa app, go to Skills & Games, and verify that the Ecobee skill shows as enabled and linked to your account.
