Pair AirPods to a Chromebook
- Put your AirPods in the charging case and open the lid. Keep the AirPods inside.
- Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the status light flashes white. This puts the AirPods in pairing mode.
- On your Chromebook, click the clock in the bottom-right corner to open the system tray.
- Click the Bluetooth icon. If Bluetooth is off, click to turn it on.
- Your AirPods appear in the list of available devices. Click them to connect.
- The status changes to “Connected.” Audio now routes through the AirPods.
The setup button is the small circular button on the back of the AirPods charging case, between the hinge and the charging port. For AirPods Max, press and hold the noise control button on the right ear cup until the status light flashes white.
Reconnect After First Pairing
After the initial pairing, your AirPods are saved as a Bluetooth device on the Chromebook. To reconnect:
- Open the AirPods case or take them out of the case.
- Click the clock area on the Chromebook, then click Bluetooth.
- Find your AirPods in the “Previously connected” list and click to connect.
Chrome OS doesn’t auto-connect AirPods the way Apple devices do. You need to manually reconnect each time. If the AirPods connect to your iPhone instead, disconnect them from the iPhone first (or turn off Bluetooth on the iPhone) before connecting to the Chromebook.
Adjust Audio Settings
Once connected, make sure audio is routing through the AirPods:
- Click the clock area in the bottom-right.
- Click the volume slider arrow (or the audio output icon).
- Under “Output,” select your AirPods.
- Under “Input,” select your AirPods if you want to use the microphone.
You can also adjust the volume using the Chromebook’s volume keys. The AirPods don’t have their own volume controls that work with Chrome OS – you control volume entirely from the Chromebook.

AirPods connect to Chromebooks as standard Bluetooth headphones. The core audio functions work well, but Apple-specific features like automatic ear detection, Siri, and seamless device switching aren’t available on Chrome OS.

Use AirPods for Video Calls
AirPods work for Google Meet, Zoom, and other video call apps on Chromebooks.
- Connect the AirPods via Bluetooth.
- Open your video call app (Google Meet, Zoom, etc.).
- In the app’s audio settings, select AirPods as both the speaker and microphone.
- In Google Meet: click the three-dot menu, then Settings, then Audio, and select AirPods for both speaker and microphone.
The microphone quality on AirPods through Chromebook is decent for calls but not as good as on Apple devices. Bluetooth microphone audio is compressed, which is normal for all Bluetooth headphones on any non-Apple platform.
Switch Between AirPods and Chromebook Speakers
To quickly switch audio output without disconnecting the AirPods:
- Click the clock area.
- Click the audio output icon (or volume slider arrow).
- Select “Internal Speaker” to switch to Chromebook speakers, or select AirPods to switch back.
This is useful during video calls when you want to temporarily switch to the built-in speakers or microphone.
Troubleshooting
AirPods not appearing in Bluetooth list. Make sure the AirPods are in pairing mode (case open, status light flashing white after holding the setup button). If the light isn’t flashing white, hold the setup button for 15 seconds. Move the AirPods closer to the Chromebook. Turn Bluetooth off and on again on the Chromebook. Restart the Chromebook.
Connected but no audio. Click the clock area and check that AirPods are selected as the audio output device. Some Chromebooks default to internal speakers even when Bluetooth headphones are connected. Open a video or music app and make sure volume is turned up on both the Chromebook and in the app.

Audio lag or stuttering. Move closer to the Chromebook. Close other Bluetooth devices that might cause interference. Disconnect and reconnect the AirPods. Update Chrome OS: go to Settings, then “About ChromeOS,” then “Check for updates.” Older Chrome OS versions sometimes have Bluetooth audio bugs that updates fix.
Only one AirPod playing sound. Put both AirPods back in the case, close the lid for 10 seconds, then take them out and reconnect. Check the audio balance: go to Settings, then “Accessibility,” then “Audio and captions,” and make sure the left/right balance is centered.
AirPods keep disconnecting. AirPods may auto-connect to your iPhone or iPad if those devices are nearby with Bluetooth on. Turn off Bluetooth on your Apple devices while using AirPods with the Chromebook. Also check the AirPods battery level – low battery causes connection instability.
Do AirPods Pro noise cancellation controls work on Chromebook?
ANC stays active on whatever mode you last set on an Apple device. To switch between ANC, Transparency, and Off, squeeze and hold the force sensor on the AirPods Pro stem. There’s no software control for ANC modes on Chrome OS – the physical controls on the AirPods are the only way to switch modes.
Are AirPods the best Bluetooth headphones for Chromebooks?
AirPods work fine, but since you lose most Apple-specific features on a Chromebook, there’s no particular advantage to using them over other Bluetooth headphones. If you already own AirPods, they’re perfectly good for Chromebook use. If you’re buying headphones specifically for a Chromebook, any decent Bluetooth headphones give you the same experience since all connect as standard Bluetooth audio devices.
Can I connect AirPods and use the Chromebook’s built-in mic?
Yes. Connect the AirPods for audio output, then in the audio settings (click the clock, then audio output), set “Output” to AirPods and “Input” to “Internal Mic.” This sends audio through the AirPods while using the Chromebook’s microphone for calls. This can give better microphone quality in some cases since the Chromebook mic isn’t bandwidth-limited by Bluetooth.
