What Makes the Canon R5’s Eye Tracking Special
The Canon R5 uses Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, which covers the entire sensor with over 1,000 selectable AF zones. That alone makes it fast. But the real standout feature is its deep-learning-based eye detection, which can identify and lock onto the eyes of people, animals, and even vehicles. Once you’ve tried shooting portraits or wildlife with eye tracking active, it’s hard to go back to manually selecting focus points.

Enabling Eye Detection AF
Eye detection is turned on by default on the R5, but it’s worth checking that everything is set correctly, especially if you’ve changed settings or reset the camera at some point.
1. Press the MENU button and go to the AF tab (the purple camera icon).
2. Navigate to Subject to Detect.
3. Choose your subject type: People, Animals (covers dogs, cats, birds), or Vehicles (cars, motorcycles, trains, planes).
4. Make sure Eye Detection is set to Enable.
When Eye Detection is active, you’ll see a small square appear over the detected eye in the viewfinder or on the rear screen. If the camera detects multiple subjects, you can switch between them using the multi-controller (joystick) on the back of the camera.
Choosing the Right AF Method
The R5 offers several AF area modes, and not all of them work equally well with eye tracking. Here’s how each one interacts with Eye Detection.
Face Detection + Tracking (Best for Most Situations)
This is the AF method you’ll want to use most of the time with eye detection. Set it by pressing the AF point selection button and scrolling until you see the face icon with a tracking box. In this mode, the camera automatically finds faces in the frame, detects eyes, and tracks them as your subject moves. You don’t need to place a focus point anywhere. The camera does all the work.
It works well for portraits, events, street photography, and any situation where people are moving through the frame.
Zone AF
Zone AF limits focus to a rectangular area you define. Eye detection still works within that zone, but the camera ignores subjects outside it. This is useful when you’re shooting in a crowd and want to focus on one specific person. Set the zone over your intended subject, and the R5 will prioritize their eye within that area.
1-Point AF
In single-point mode, eye detection is less reliable. The camera can still detect eyes, but only if the eye is very close to your selected focus point. For most eye-tracking work, stick with Face Detection + Tracking or Zone AF.
Spot AF
Spot AF uses an even smaller focus area than 1-Point. It’s designed for precision focus on a specific detail, like an eyelash or the pupil itself. Eye detection technically works here, but the focus area is so small that the camera often loses the eye as the subject shifts slightly. Use Spot AF only when your subject is completely still and you need pinpoint accuracy.
Eye Tracking in Practice: Portraits
For portraits, set the camera to Face Detection + Tracking, select People as the subject type, and enable Servo AF (continuous autofocus). The camera will find the nearest eye and track it as your subject turns, tilts, or walks toward you.
The R5 defaults to tracking the eye closest to the camera, which is usually the correct choice. If you want to switch to the other eye, tap the screen or use the joystick to override.
In practice, eye tracking on the R5 is sticky. It holds focus even when your subject briefly looks away and then turns back. With Servo AF set to Case 2 (continue to track subjects, ignoring obstacles), the camera won’t jump to a background object when something crosses between you and your subject.
Tip: For group portraits, the camera may jump between subjects. In this situation, use Zone AF around the person you want in focus, or tap their face on the touchscreen to set them as the priority subject.
Eye Tracking for Wildlife and Animals
Switch the Subject to Detect setting to Animals. The R5 recognizes dogs, cats, and birds, detecting their eyes, faces, and bodies. For birds, it can also track the head when the eye isn’t visible.
Animal eye detection works best with the following setup:
AF method: Face Detection + Tracking
Servo AF Case: Case 1 (versatile multi-purpose) or Case 4 (for subjects that accelerate or decelerate quickly)
AF speed: Leave at 0 (default) unless you find the focus hunting
Birds in flight are the toughest test. The R5 handles them well with firmware 1.8.1 and later, which improved bird eye detection at longer distances. Pair the R5 with a 100 to 500mm or 200 to 800mm lens, set the initial AF point to the center, and let the tracking system take over once it finds the bird.
One common frustration is that the camera sometimes locks onto the body instead of the eye, especially at longer distances or with smaller birds. If this happens, try getting closer (if possible) or switching to Zone AF and placing the zone where the bird’s head will be.
Vehicle Eye Detection
The Vehicles subject type detects the front of cars, motorcycles, trains, and planes. “Eye” detection in this context means the camera locks onto headlights or cockpit areas. It works well for motorsport photography. Set Servo AF Case to Case 3 (instantly focus on subjects entering the AF zone) for vehicles approaching the camera at speed.
Servo AF Settings That Matter
Servo AF is continuous autofocus, and the R5 lets you customize how aggressively it tracks.
Servo AF Case presets (found in the AF menu) are numbered 1 through 4, and each one adjusts how the camera responds to obstacles, sudden speed changes, and erratic movement.
Case 1 is the default all-purpose setting. Case 2 is best for portraits and situations where you want the camera to ignore brief obstructions. Case 3 reacts quickly to new subjects entering the frame, which suits motorsport and action. Case 4 handles subjects that speed up and slow down unpredictably.
You can also fine-tune the Tracking sensitivity and Acceleration/deceleration tracking sliders within each case preset for even more control.
Firmware Improvements for Eye AF
Canon has released several firmware updates that improved the R5’s eye detection. Firmware 1.5 added vehicle detection. Firmware 1.8.1 significantly improved bird eye detection at long distances and in cluttered backgrounds. As of August 2026, the latest firmware continues to refine detection speed and accuracy, so check Canon’s support page for any new releases.
Updating firmware is straightforward: download the file from Canon’s website, copy it to an SD card, insert the card in the camera, and go to the setup menu to start the update.
Troubleshooting: Eye Detection Not Locking
If eye detection isn’t working as expected, run through this checklist.
Check the subject type. If you’re shooting animals but the camera is set to People, eye detection won’t recognize the animal’s eye. Switch to the correct subject type in the AF menu.
Make sure Eye Detection is enabled. It can be toggled off in the AF settings, and it sometimes gets turned off accidentally.
Use Face Detection + Tracking AF method. Eye detection works best in this mode. Other AF area modes limit where the camera looks for eyes.
Check the distance. Eye detection needs the eye to be large enough in the frame to be recognized. If the subject is very far away, the camera may detect the face or body but not the eye.
Clean your viewfinder sensor. Dirt or smudges on the EVF sensor can sometimes confuse the camera’s eye control feature (which detects your own eye at the viewfinder). This is separate from subject eye detection, but it can interfere with focus behavior.
Update firmware. Older firmware versions have known limitations with eye detection in certain lighting or with specific animal species. Updating to the latest version often fixes intermittent detection issues.
