Set Up Alexa on Your iPhone

Download the Amazon Alexa app from the App Store.
Open the app and sign in with your Amazon account.
The app walks you through adding your Echo device if you haven’t already.
Allow notifications when prompted so Alexa can send alerts to your phone.

The Alexa app is the control center for all your Echo devices. Through it, you manage WiFi settings, smart home devices, music services, routines, and shopping lists. Once installed, your iPhone can communicate with every Echo device on your Amazon account.

Use Your Echo as an iPhone Bluetooth Speaker

You can stream audio from your iPhone through an Echo speaker over Bluetooth. Any app’s audio – Apple Music, YouTube, phone calls, podcasts – plays through the Echo.

Say “Alexa, pair” to your Echo device.
On your iPhone, open Settings, then Bluetooth.
Look for your Echo in the available devices list (it appears as “Echo-XXX” or the device’s name).
Tap to connect.
Play audio on your iPhone. It comes through the Echo speaker.

To disconnect, say “Alexa, disconnect Bluetooth” or turn off Bluetooth on your iPhone. The pairing is saved, so reconnecting later is quick – just say “Alexa, connect to Bluetooth” and it links back to your iPhone.

Pair Through the Alexa App

Open the Alexa app.
Tap “Devices” at the bottom.
Tap “Echo & Alexa,” then select your Echo.
Tap “Bluetooth Devices,” then “Pair a New Device.”
Your Echo enters pairing mode and searches for nearby devices.
On your iPhone, go to Settings, then Bluetooth, and tap the Echo when it appears.

This method works when voice pairing doesn’t, or when Alexa can’t hear you clearly from across the room. The app also shows you which devices have been previously paired.

Make Calls and Send Messages

Alexa can make calls and send messages to other Alexa users, your phone contacts, or landlines (in the US, UK, Canada, and Mexico).

In the Alexa app, tap “Communicate” (the speech bubble icon).
The app asks to access your contacts. Allow it.
Verify your phone number when prompted.
Now you can say “Alexa, call [contact name]” or “Alexa, send a message to [name].”

Calls to US and Canadian phone numbers are free through Alexa. You can also make calls directly from the Alexa app on your iPhone without speaking to an Echo. Drop In lets you instantly connect to other Echo devices in your home – useful for an intercom system between rooms.

Get iPhone Notifications on Alexa

The Alexa app can mirror certain notifications to your Echo device:

Open the Alexa app on your iPhone.
Tap “More,” then “Settings.”
Tap “Notifications.”
Enable the categories you want (reminders, shopping list updates, delivery notifications).

Alexa won’t read all your iPhone notifications. It’s limited to Amazon-related alerts, Alexa reminders, and communications through the Alexa app. For full iPhone notification mirroring, you’d need a separate integration or smart display setup. The Echo does announce incoming Alexa calls and Drop Ins in real time.

Use Siri Shortcuts With Alexa

You can trigger Alexa actions from Siri using the Alexa app’s Siri Shortcuts integration:

Open the Alexa app.
Tap “More,” then “Settings,” then “Siri Shortcuts” (if available on your device).
Choose an Alexa action (like playing music, turning on lights, or running a routine).
Record a Siri phrase for it.

Now saying that phrase to Siri triggers the Alexa action. For example, you could say “Hey Siri, good night” and have it run your Alexa bedtime routine that turns off lights and locks the door. The Alexa app handles the action in the background.

Control Smart Home Devices From iPhone

Once your smart home devices are set up through Alexa, you can control them from the Alexa app on your iPhone from anywhere with internet access.

Open the Alexa app.
Tap “Devices.”
Browse by room or device type (lights, plugs, thermostats, locks).
Tap any device to toggle it or adjust settings.

You don’t need to be on the same WiFi network as your Echo. The Alexa app controls devices through Amazon’s cloud, so you can turn off lights or check your thermostat from work or while traveling.

Troubleshooting

Bluetooth won’t pair. Make sure no other device is currently connected to the Echo via Bluetooth (it only handles one connection at a time). Put the Echo in pairing mode again by saying “Alexa, pair.” On your iPhone, forget the Echo in Bluetooth settings (tap the “i” icon next to it, then “Forget This Device”) and try pairing fresh.

Alexa app won’t find my Echo. Both your iPhone and Echo need to be on the same WiFi network for initial setup. Make sure Bluetooth and Location Services are enabled on your iPhone – the app uses both for device discovery. Force close the Alexa app and reopen it. Restart your iPhone if the problem persists.

Audio cuts out over Bluetooth. Move your iPhone closer to the Echo. Bluetooth range is about 30 feet, and walls reduce it. Check that your iPhone isn’t connecting to another Bluetooth device simultaneously. Close apps that might be fighting for the audio output.

Calls through Alexa aren’t working. Verify your phone number in the Alexa app (Communicate tab, then the contact icon in the top-right). Make sure you’ve given the app access to your contacts. Both you and the person you’re calling need to have Alexa calling set up if you’re making an Alexa-to-Alexa call.

Can I use Alexa on my iPhone without an Echo?

Yes. The Alexa app itself has a built-in voice assistant. Tap the Alexa button in the app to ask questions, set reminders, control smart home devices, and more. You won’t get the always-listening hands-free experience of an Echo, but all of Alexa’s knowledge and skills work through the app.

Does Alexa work with Apple Music?

Yes. You can link Apple Music to Alexa in the app under Settings, then “Music & Podcasts,” then “Link New Service.” Once linked, say “Alexa, play [song] on Apple Music.” You can also set Apple Music as the default music service so you don’t have to say “on Apple Music” every time.

Can I use AirPods with Alexa?

Not directly with the Echo. AirPods connect to your iPhone, and the Echo connects separately to your iPhone via Bluetooth. You can use AirPods to listen to audio from the Alexa app on your iPhone, but you can’t pair AirPods directly to an Echo device. For hands-free Alexa through earbuds, Amazon offers Echo Buds or you can use any Bluetooth headphones paired to the Echo.
