When Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp Went Down
In one of the most notable tech disruptions in recent memory, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp all went offline at the same time during a massive global outage. Millions of users around the world reported that messages wouldn’t send, feeds wouldn’t load, and the platforms were completely unreachable for hours.
The issue appeared to stem from a DNS error. DNS (Domain Name System) is the mechanism that translates web addresses into the server locations users are trying to reach. When DNS breaks down at this scale, entire platforms become inaccessible even though the underlying servers may still be running.

Outage tracking platform Downdetector collected reports from more than 100,000 users experiencing problems with Facebook alone. The numbers for Instagram and WhatsApp were similarly staggering, painting a picture of just how widespread the disruption was.
The outage had a ripple effect well beyond social media. Many users rely on their Facebook login credentials to access third-party apps and games like Pokemon Go and Match Masters. When Facebook’s authentication servers went down, those services were knocked offline as well.
The Match Masters gaming app acknowledged the problem on social media:

The financial impact was immediate and significant. Facebook’s share price dropped by 5.5% in afternoon trading as news of the outage spread across financial markets.

It also raised questions about the risks of concentrating so many essential services under one corporate umbrella.
