How to Read the Canon T6 Histogram for Perfect Exposure

The LCD screen on the back of your Canon Rebel T6 can be misleading. A photo might look perfectly exposed on that small screen, only to reveal blown highlights or muddy shadows when you open it on your computer. The Canon T6 histogram solves this problem by giving you an objective, data-driven view of your exposure. Once you learn to read it, you’ll catch exposure problems in the field, while you can still fix them.

What Is a Histogram?

A histogram is a graph that shows the distribution of brightness values in your photo. The horizontal axis runs from pure black on the left to pure white on the right. The vertical axis shows how many pixels fall at each brightness level. Think of it as a mountain range where the peaks represent tones that appear most frequently in your image.

A well-exposed photo typically shows a histogram that spreads across most of the graph without slamming hard against either edge. If the graph is bunched up on the left side, your image is underexposed (too dark). If it’s piled up on the right, you’re overexposed (too bright). Spikes that get cut off at the very edges mean you’ve lost detail, those shadows are pure black or those highlights are pure white, and no amount of editing will recover them.

Brightness Histogram vs. RGB Histogram

The Canon T6 can display two types of histograms: brightness and RGB.

The brightness histogram (also called luminance histogram) shows a single white graph that represents overall lightness. It’s the simpler view and works well for quick exposure checks. Most photographers start here.

The RGB histogram breaks the image into its three color channels: Red, Green, and Blue. You’ll see three separate graphs overlapping, each showing the brightness distribution for one color. This view gives you more detailed information about color-specific exposure problems that the brightness histogram might hide.

For example, a sunset photo might show a balanced brightness histogram, but the RGB view could reveal that the red channel is clipping (pushed to pure red) while the blue channel is heavily underexposed. Without the RGB view, you’d miss that detail entirely.

How to Access the Histogram on the Canon T6

During Playback

Take a photo, then press the Playback button to view it on the LCD. Press the Info button (or the up button on the directional pad) to cycle through the display modes. Keep pressing until you see the histogram overlay. Pressing Info again toggles between the brightness histogram and the RGB histogram view.

The histogram display also shows basic shooting data alongside the graph, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and file size. This combination lets you quickly assess both the exposure and the settings that produced it.

During Live View

If you shoot in Live View mode, you can display a real-time histogram on screen before you take the photo. Press the Live View button to activate Live View, then press the Info button to cycle through display options until the histogram appears. This live histogram updates as you change settings, so you can watch the graph shift as you adjust aperture, shutter speed, or ISO. It’s an incredibly useful tool for getting exposure right before you shoot.

Reading the Canon T6 Histogram: Practical Examples

Well-Exposed Image

A well-exposed histogram shows data spread across the full range from left to right, with the bulk of the graph sitting somewhere in the middle. There are no hard spikes cut off at either edge. The shape might look like a broad hill or a series of smaller peaks, that’s normal. Different subjects produce different histogram shapes, so there’s no single “correct” pattern.

Overexposed Image (Highlights Clipped)

If the histogram shows a tall spike jammed against the right edge, your highlights are blown out. Those areas in the photo are pure white with no recoverable detail. You’ll often see this when shooting bright skies, white clothing, or reflective surfaces. Fix it by lowering your exposure, use a faster shutter speed, smaller aperture, or lower ISO.

The Canon T6 also offers a highlight alert feature (sometimes called “blinkies”). When enabled, overexposed areas of the photo flash black and white during playback, making blown highlights easy to spot at a glance.

Underexposed Image (Shadows Crushed)

A histogram piled up on the left side means your image is too dark. Shadows have been crushed to pure black, and those areas contain no usable detail. This happens often when shooting in harsh contrast, backlit subjects, deep shade, or indoor scenes with limited light. Increase your exposure with a slower shutter speed, wider aperture, or higher ISO to fix it.

High-Contrast Scene

Some scenes produce a histogram with peaks at both ends and a valley in the middle. This U-shaped pattern indicates a high-contrast scene, bright highlights and deep shadows with not much in between. This is common in outdoor photography on sunny days. You may need to decide which end of the exposure you prioritize, or use fill flash or HDR techniques to compress the dynamic range.

Using the RGB Histogram for Color Accuracy

The RGB histogram is especially valuable when shooting scenes with dominant colors. If you’re photographing a red car and the red channel graph shows clipping on the right, you’re losing detail in the red tones even though the overall brightness histogram might look fine. Backing off the exposure slightly will preserve those color details.

Similarly, skin tones in portraits are heavily influenced by the red and green channels. If either of those clips, skin can look unnatural or washed out. Checking the RGB histogram after portrait shots helps ensure accurate, flattering skin rendering.

Tips for Using the Canon T6 Histogram Effectively

Check the histogram after your first few shots in any new lighting situation. Don’t rely on the LCD image alone, it’s affected by screen brightness and ambient light, making it unreliable for judging exposure.

Use the “expose to the right” technique. Push your exposure as bright as possible without clipping the highlights. This captures the maximum amount of data in the file, giving you more room to adjust shadows and tones in post-processing.

Remember that histograms are guides, not rules. A nighttime cityscape will naturally have a left-heavy histogram. A snow scene will lean right. That’s correct, the histogram reflects the scene, and not every photo should look like a centered bell curve.

The Canon T6 histogram is one of the most reliable exposure tools available to you in the field. Once you develop the habit of checking it regularly, you’ll bring home far fewer photos with unrecoverable blown highlights or crushed shadows.
