Arlo Pro: What You’re Working With
The original Arlo Pro is a wireless security camera that records in 720p HD with rechargeable batteries, two-way audio, and night vision. Unlike newer models, the Arlo Pro requires a dedicated base station (not a SmartHub) that connects to your router via Ethernet. The system is still a solid choice for basic home security in 2026, especially if you bought one at a discount or already own the hardware. Here’s how to get everything up and running.
Connecting the Base Station
The base station is the central hub that your cameras talk to. It needs a wired Ethernet connection to your router.
1. Take the included Ethernet cable and plug one end into the back of the base station.
2. Plug the other end into an available port on your home router or switch.
3. Connect the base station’s power adapter and plug it into a wall outlet.
4. Wait about two minutes. The power LED will turn green, and the internet LED will turn green once the base station has an active internet connection.
Place the base station in a central location if possible. The cameras connect to it wirelessly, so the closer the base station is to where you’ll install the cameras, the stronger the signal will be. Avoid putting it inside a metal cabinet or behind a TV, as that can block the wireless signal.
Setting Up the Arlo App
Download the Arlo app on your iPhone or Android phone. Open it and create an account if you don’t have one. The app will walk you through adding a new system.
1. Tap Add New Device.
2. Select Cameras, then Arlo Pro.
3. The app will ask how you’re connecting. Select Base Station.
4. Scan the QR code on the bottom or back of the base station.
5. The app will detect the base station and add it to your account.
If the QR code scan fails, you can enter the serial number manually. It’s printed on the same label as the QR code.
Syncing Cameras to the Base Station
With the base station registered, it’s time to add cameras.
1. Insert a charged battery into the camera. The battery compartment is on the bottom, secured by a latch.
2. Press the Sync button on the top of the base station. The Sync LED will start blinking.
3. Within two minutes, press the Sync button on the camera. It’s a small recessed button, so you may need a pen or paperclip.
4. The camera LED will blink amber, then turn blue, and then go off. That means it’s synced.
5. The app should show the camera in your device list within a few seconds.
Repeat this for each camera. The original Arlo Pro base station supports up to 15 cameras, though most home setups use between two and five.
Positioning and Mounting
Arlo Pro cameras come with a magnetic mount similar to newer models. Screw the mount plate into a wall, fence, or eave, and the camera attaches magnetically. The ball joint lets you adjust the angle in any direction.
For the best motion detection, position cameras 6 to 8 feet off the ground. Point them so that people or vehicles move across the camera’s field of view rather than directly toward it. Test each camera’s view through the app before permanently mounting it. The live view lets you verify the angle, coverage area, and image quality from where you plan to install it.
Battery Life and Optimization
Battery life on the original Arlo Pro depends heavily on how many events it records per day. With moderate traffic (10 to 20 motion events per day), expect roughly three to four months per charge. Heavy use can drop that to four to six weeks.
To extend battery life:
Adjust motion sensitivity: In the app, go to each camera’s settings and lower the sensitivity from the default. Start at around 70% and adjust from there. Too high, and every passing car or swaying branch triggers a recording.
Use scheduling: If you don’t need 24/7 recording, set the cameras to arm only during certain hours. For example, arm them from 10 PM to 7 AM and while you’re at work.
Reduce video length: By default, the camera records for a set duration after detecting motion. Shortening this from 30 seconds to 15 seconds cuts battery drain roughly in half.
Night Vision and Video Settings
The Arlo Pro has automatic infrared night vision that kicks in when ambient light drops below a certain level. You don’t need to configure this manually. The night vision range is about 25 feet, which covers most porches, driveways, and backyards.
Video quality is locked at 720p on the original Arlo Pro. You can’t change the resolution, but you can adjust brightness and enable or disable the activity LED (the small light on the front that glows when the camera is active). Turning off the activity LED makes the camera less noticeable.
Cloud Storage and Local Backup
Arlo offers a free plan that includes 7 days of cloud recordings. After 7 days, older clips are automatically deleted. If you need longer storage, Arlo’s paid plans (Arlo Secure) start at a few dollars per month and give you 30 days of cloud history, plus features like person detection and package detection.
The original Arlo Pro base station also has a USB port on the back. You can plug in a USB flash drive or external hard drive to record clips locally as a backup. This is a good option if you want to keep recordings without paying for a subscription.
Arlo Pro vs. Pro 2 and Pro 3
If you’re deciding between Arlo Pro models or considering an upgrade, here are the key differences:
Arlo Pro (original): 720p video, base station required, rechargeable battery, basic motion detection.
Arlo Pro 2: Bumps the resolution to 1080p, adds activity zones, and works with the SmartHub. Battery life is similar.
